Learning More About Love Every Day
In the last six months I have spent most nights at Kelly's house. He calls it my own, my clothes have all migrated over. Last night I had planned to spend the night at my house. I was getting together with Lindsay and my place was more quiet, more private and closer to her work. Plus I wondered if the kids ever wanted to not have to share their dad with me. I thought maybe a night apart would be okay.
With the evening approaching I was already feeling sad that I wouldn't be sitting around the table with Riley, Keaton and Kelly sharing our day and laughing at silly things. I surmised it was for the best and distracted myself with work.
A little after five my cell rang. A picture of Kelly's smiling face lit up the screen.
"Hey babe!" I said, my voice high with excitement.
"Hi Meghan! It's Riley!" she said. Her sweet eight year old voice made me choke up. I am such a sap.
"Hi sweetpea! I'm so happy to hear from you! What's going on?" I asked.
"Daddy said you and Lindsay are going to your house tonight. But why can't you guys come over to our house and hang out?" she asked. I beamed.
"Oh sweets that sounds awesome! I would love to see you guys. I miss you! Let me check with Lindsay and I'll call you back," I said, easily persuaded.
We hung up the phone and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I sat staring at the screen on my desk filled with gratitude and wonder that these wonderful people are in my life.
When I pulled into the garage at Kelly's house I was greeted at the door by Keaton. Four years old, a smile like a flood light and dressed in a shirt that hung to his knees. He couldn't wait to show me the shirt. Riley came running with a fork full of food, holding it close to my mouth and insisting I try the yummy chicken Daddy made. I could not stop smiling. Coming home to this was like being the queen of the parade.
We all gathered around the table and they talked over each other to tell me about their days.
These sweet little monkeys have had to endure some pretty tough stuff in the wake of their parent's separation. Yet they are so happy, such kind spirits, they have risen above it all. I really love who they are as people.
When I laid down in bed that night after I was sure Kelly had fallen asleep I closed my eyes and said thank you quietly over and over again. I am not a religious person but I felt compelled to tell the universe how much I appreciate all I've been blessed with. It's sweeter than I ever could have imagined.

This made me feel happy and warm. Thank you, it is the sweetest thing ever! You are so lucky.
